Project news
The CHACE project has moved into its final year of operations, and it has been a more dramatic period following the October 7 attacks and the Hamas-Israel war. This is a brief note on recent project activities.
I co-authored a report evaluating the Norwegian government’s action plans against antisemitism. The report, Evaluering av handlingsplaner mot antisemittisme 2016-2023, was published by Proba samfunnsanalyse in April 2023 and can be accessed here (in Norwegian only).
The Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and the resulting war in Gaza led to a global wave of antisemitic hostility that rattled Jewish communities in many countries, including here in Norway. The CHACE project has helped shed light on these developments in Norway and internationally on multiple occasions since then:
- On 8 November 2023, I contributed to a podcast episode about the resurgence of antisemitism at Minervapodden (link).
- On 9 November 2023, I published an op-ed on the “new” antisemitism in VG, Norway’s largest newspaper.
- In November 2023, NRK, the Norwegian public service broadcaster, surveyed Norwegian Jews about their experiences with antisemitism following 7 October. I was interviewed to comment on the results of this survey for an article published on NRK.no on 30 November 2023 and for the NRK evening news.
- In January 2024, my article about the Jewish Pathfinders project was published in For a Righteous Cause, an annual report published by the Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry at Tel Aviv University to document and analyze developments and initiatives in the fight against antisemitism and racism globally. The article, entitled “Norway: Know Thy Neighbor”, discusses the Jewish Pathfinders project, a remarkable intervention by the Jewish Community of Oslo designed to familiarize young Norwegians with Jews and thereby reduce the potential for antisemitism in tomorrow’s society.
- In May 2024, my article “Scandinavia: Some Cold Realities”, describing developments related to antisemitism in Scandinavia in the months following October 7, was published in the report Antisemitism Worldwide, an annual publication by the Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry at Tel Aviv University.
- In May 2024, my op-ed discussing how antizionist slogans can mask antisemitic attitudes was published in the newspaper Klassekampen. A PDF of the article can be downloaded here.
In April 2024, a peer-reviewed article entitled “Det eldste hatet i en ny tid” (“The oldest hatred in a new era”) was published in the journal Agora. An ungated version of the paper can be read here (in Norwegian).
In June 2024, I presented ongoing research from the CHACE project at the Nordic Conference on Violent Extremism, held at the University of Oslo. The talk, entitled “Does antizionism mask antisemitism? Evidence from Norwegian and European surveys”, is briefly summarized here.
